5 significant songs, 2014

in order of appearance:

2 steps twice - foals
i went to watch foals alone because my friends were all being lame and annoying, and i'm glad i went because it was amazing. if you listen to their songs in any other setting, i don't think you could ever imagine the power and impact they have in their live shows. just watch this.

zebra zebra
i walked past the tv one night and my mother was watching the voice of china. the girl was singing this song and i was instantly captivated by her airy vocals that made me feel like i was floating somewhere far from home.

that would've been the end of things because i had no clue as to who was she or what the song was (and i suspected it was only good when she sang it anyway), but the next day at work my colleague was butchering songs with his singing as usual, and i thought i heard a few strains of that zebra song. was i hearing things?

no i wasn't, because he spent the next month destroying our collective eardrums with his version of this song.

fin - anberlin
when i went for anberlin's final show, my heart was set on seeing the highlight of the night, the unwinding cable car. little did i know that this song would far outshine it as a powerful finale that seemed to lay bare all the emotions of everyone present.

i'm into you - chet faker
laneway lineup was announced, and as i do every year, i try my best to check out the bands before i rapidly lose interest. this year i had a lot more time to explore youtube in the comfort of my office chair, and i really did try my best, but as it turns out every year, the bands most hyped by the hipster crowd always churn out the worst music to ever wriggle their way into my ears.

this guy though, he's something special. his music facilitated the smooth passage of countless afternoons.

dead wrong intro - the notorious xx
this has to be my song of the year. i don't know how i haven't ever heard this before, seeing that it was released in 2010.

who knew that xx and rap could sound this good? and there's an entire album of it.
